Queen Elizabeth Hospital Therapies Clinic
The refurbishment of the Physiotherapy Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital was long overdue and essential not only to improve the existing Therapies facilities and patient care but also to free up precious space adjacent to the Radiology Department to enable its’ future redevelopment and expansion.
Relocating the Therapies Department to a part of the hospital site previously known as the Command Centre gave us the opportunity to work with a unique space, distinguished by architectural features such as double-pitched ceilings, exposed timber trusses, and clerestory glazing.
Our design focused on balancing the preservation of the internal space's character with transforming it into a therapeutic environment. While we enclosed many of the timber trusses to prevent high-level dust accumulation, we were determined to avoid using a false ceiling. This allowed us to retain the enhanced ceiling height and maximize natural light. Additionally, the space maintains a visual and physical connection to the outdoors, opening into a private green space that now serves as a healing garden.
With 12 consulting bays, an assessment room, a versatile gym space, dedicated offices for physiotherapists and administrative staff, the new Physiotherapy Department was designed to improve both efficiency and quality of service delivery.
The Command Centre now serves as the primary location for patient care and engagement, while modular cabins in the adjacent garden provide additional office space for staff.
