Queen Elizabeth Hospital Spect CT

This project involved relocating the Nuclear Medicine Department from University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). The transition aimed to enhance local service delivery, as 70% of nuclear medicine referrals originated from the Woolwich site. It also freed up critical space in UHL's Radiology department for a second CT scanner, which was essential for meeting national cancer targets through faster diagnostic services.

At Floyd Slaski Architects, we prioritize integrating biophilic design into our healthcare projects—especially in scanning rooms, where patients often experience uneasiness and nervousness. Research shows that exposure to nature can help alleviate anxiety, which is why we incorporate biophilic elements to assist patients in coping with the physical constraints of being in a scanner and the emotional uncertainty of waiting for results.

For the new SPECT-CT unit at QEH, we chose earthy tones combined with wood textures and worked closely with the clinical team to select inspiring images of nature. These design choices are expected to help reduce stress levels and expedite healing for patients. Additionally, creating this atmosphere enhances positivity, productivity, clarity of thought, and improves the overall well-being of staff, patients, and visitors passing through the unit.
