Private House Extension - Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

Corners necessarily herald change – from one road ‘turning into’ the next. How corner buildings express that change is always unique, and architects find the examples and the potential exciting. In conservation terms however, the break from the design ‘safety’ of a mid-terrace condition holds few rules and ultimately remains subjective.

Our approach was to sensitively deploy a traditional architectural language to wrap period features around the corner, with band-heights relating to both street frontages, to form a pilastered portico. Secondary to that, recessed planes to enclose the space; a tertiary move to introduce vertical and horizontal glazing which through its contemporary detailing resists interrogation as window forms and addresses privacy issues.
