AUDE - Launch of the Neurodiversity Guide
Creating Spaces that Work for Everyone: The Launch of the Neurodiversity Guide by Stephanie Kyle
At the heart of higher education, the built environment shapes the daily experiences of all who interact with it. That’s why the launch of the Neurodiversity – Design and Management Guide for Higher Education Environments by Stephanie Kyle is a game-changer. This guide isn’t just a milestone for AUDE and our team—it’s a step towards inclusivity, and a reflection of Steph’s lifelong commitment to ensuring everyone has the space they need to thrive.
On a personal note, this project resonates deeply with me. As someone with lived experience navigating environments that often overlook the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals, I understand first-hand the challenges that arise from inadequate design. My journey has fuelled my passion for creating environments that consider the sensory and information processing differences many face. I am hopeful that the principles and recommendations set out in this guide will not only inform better design decisions but also make a tangible difference in the lives of people like me and many others across the higher education sector.
Through extensive research, expert collaboration, and invaluable feedback from the neurodiverse community, this guide offers practical, actionable solutions. It’s not just about meeting regulatory standards like BS 8300 and PAS6463; it’s about creating environments that actively support and uplift every student, staff member, contractor, and visitor. Let’s make our university estates places where everyone truly feels welcome and valued.
Furthermore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to The University of Nottingham and Buro Happold for their outstanding collaboration on this project. Their expert insights and practical experience have been invaluable in refining the guide’s recommendations. By combining academic rigor with real-world industry expertise, our partnership has ensured that the guidance is both innovative and grounded in everyday application. This collaboration not only enriched the content of the guide but also exemplifies the power of cross-sector teamwork in creating truly inclusive spaces—spaces where every individual, regardless of neurodivergence, can thrive.
This guide is a testament to our collective belief that every step taken towards inclusivity matters. It is not a declaration of perfection but a significant step forward—a commitment to continue evolving and improving the spaces in which we live, learn, and work. I invite you to explore these recommendations with an open mind and a shared commitment to building environments that truly accommodate the rich diversity of human experience.
Thank you for joining me on this journey toward more inclusive, welcoming university estates.
