Floyd Slaski LLP enjoys a challenge and they don’t come much bigger than installing a state of the art compact linear accelerator together with 300 tonnes of lead shielding in the basement of a grade II listed Georgian property in Harley Street.

Working closely with the users, suppliers, other consultants and Westminster Planning the practice was able to produce a scheme that blended contemporary design with eighteenth century style.

As the CyberKnife® needs a three metre clear head height with over half a metre above for shielding and 900mm below for services and foundations the rear of the building had to be excavated to a depth of over 1.5m to ensure it would fit. The building was occupied from the ground floor upward for the duration of the works including the lengthy period for underpinning.

The design also incorporates a single stage passenger lift, a large removable rooflight to permit removal of the CyberKnife® in the future, consulting rooms, offices, waiting area, WCs and nurses accommodation.

The centre was opened in early 2009 as the first operational CyberKnife® facility in the UK.
